ATAOL BEHRAMOĞLU - I'VE LEARNED SOME THINGS

I've learned some things from having lived:
If you're alive, experience one thing with all your power
Your beloved should be worn out from being kissed
And you should drop exhausted from the smelling of a flower

A person can gaze at the sky for hours
Can gaze for hours at a bird, a child, the sea
To live on the earth is to become part of it
To strike down roots that won't pull free

If you cling to anything, tightly hold a friend
Fight for something with every muscle, whole body, all your passion
And if you lay yourself for a time on the warm beach
Let yourself rest like a grain of sand, a leaf, a stone

To your utmost, listen to every beautiful song
As though filling all the self with sound and melody
One should plunge head-first into life
As one dives from a cliff into the emerald sea

Distant lands should draw you, people you don't know
To read every book, know other's lives, you should be burning
You shouldn't exchange for anything the pleasure of a glass of water
No matter how much the joy, your life should be filled with yearning

You should know sorrow, honorably, with all your being
Because the pains, like joys, make a person grow
Your blood should mingle in the great circulation of life
And in your veins life's endless fresh blood should flow

I've learned some things from having lived:
If you're alive, experience largely, merge with rivers, heavens, cosmos
For what we call living is a gift given to life
And life is a gift bestowed upon us

Lycée girls were crossing the avenue
The book of civil law I gently closed tight
It was about an exam, money, a label
I lit a cigarette out of spite.

For example, I said, this world
Spins and spins in a void
This rain, this beastly September rain
Drives a fellow completely insane
Ok, but people, people
What notion do they serve

I thought and thought touched to the heart

Seconds, moments, hours and soon
The days flow like water, my brother
On one hand the text-book, my heart on the other
I didn't know what to do

AHMET HAŞİM -PROMISED LAND

Let it play with your hair, this gentle breeze
Blowing from the seven seas.
If only you knew
How lovely you are the way you gaze at the edge of the night
Steeped in the greef of exile and longing, in sorrow.

Neither you
Nor I
Nor the dusk that gathers in your beauty
Nor the blue sea.
That safe harbour for the distress that assaults the brain-
We spurn the generation which knows nothing of the soul's pain.

Mankind today
Brands you merely a fresh slender woman
And me just an old fool.
That wretched appetite, that filthy sight
Can find no meaning in you or me
Nor a tender grief in the night
Nor the sullen tremor of secrecy and disdain
On the calm sea.

You and I
And the sea
And the night that seems to gather silently,
Without trembling, the fragrance of your soul,
Far away
Torn asunder from the land where blue shadows hold sway,
We are forever doomed to this exile here.

That land?
Stretches along the chaste regions of imagination, and
A blue nightfall
Reposes there for all;
At its outer edges, the sea
Pours the calm of sleep on each soul...

There, women are lovely, tender, nocturnal, pure.
Over their eyes your sadnes hovers,
They are all sisters or lovers:
The tearful kisses on their lips can cure,
And the indigo quiet of their inquiring eyes
Can soothe the heart's suffering.
Their souls are violets
Distilled from the night of despair,
In a ceaseless search for silence and repose.
The dim glare from the moon's sorrows
Finds haven in their immaculate hands.

Ah, they are so frail-
The mute anguish they share,
The night deep in thought, the ailing sea ...
They all resemble each other there.

That land
Is on which imaginary continent, and
Dimmed by what distant river?
Is it a land of illusions- or real,
A utopia bound to remain unknown forever?

I do not know ... All I know is
You and I and the blue sea
And the dusk that vibrates in me
The strings of inspiration and agony,
Far away
Torn asunder from the land where blue shadows hold sway
We are forever doomed to this exile here.

NAİLİ -WHAT WITCH ARE YOU ?

What witch are you, that entangles our hearts
    in your curls?
You are a gazelle who sets traps in the holy sanctuary
    of the Kaaba

Your lashes are Tatar soldiers, and you the warlord,
    Hulagu
Your reign has ravaged the country of the spirit,
    the Baghdad of the heart

Both Hizir and Jesus have sacrified themselves
to the water of life of your lip
You are the drink of water for which the soul
    of Alexander thirsts

Oh my love, my sun, you are the adornment of the nine
    gardens of the skies
You cannot be compared to the beloved's cheek,
you are the wild rose that blooms alone

Oh, Nâilî, the beloved's brows scowl
    with anger
When you say of her mouth, it is as fine
as the tip of her curl

ATTILA ILHAN - POEM WITH THE SOUND OF “CH” AS IN SELCHUK (Kochaklama, Eulogy)

how many suns the selchuk shepherds
lift up with their pitch forks shouting heave ho
how many naked suns of spun glass
their iron beards igniting sparks
more tribes are coming from central asia
with twenty five hundred sixty five hundred tents
a poled dome pitched to perfection
to the shrieks of the avshars1 on the heights
underneath the crickets the black crows
cracked mountain holes full of eels
underneath konya bayshehir sivrihisar2
and far away the byzantine hyenas
more tribes are coming from central asia
they are light like a playful heart
their teeth are strong their eyes slanted a bit
in their ears no sound of the non-existing seas
in their palates the taste of the snow blue milk
freshly drawn from their robust mares and fragrant
a few elderly men of broken hopes
with bits of’ salt in the roots of their hair
their lips are sealed tight you can’t open with a knife
in their eye sockets constantly dwindling
a sandy river eaten up by the pebbles
with its dried up beds moaning in the wind
a long hoofed animal climbs up a tree
a lark touches with its glazed wings
the thorns like a scimitar thrown
oguz women with their strong faces
break up loneliness and turn it into dust
their breasts are full with nipples like blackberries
Their muscles are tightly bound to their bones
their voices full of forgiveness
they laugh out biting hard the sun
of tart pears quinces bitter oranges
they make a yogurt so thick even a knife can’t cut
a wild honey resting in their metal buckets
more tribes are coring from central asia
with their fishbone eyelashes and leather hats
men carved into hollows sword and mace
their exhaustion dripping into their hoary mustaches
their heaving while passing through the forests
is the same as the hungry axes they cut tree by tree
under a spreading crackling fire
their herds a dusty cry in front of them
pulled and carried away by the shepherd dogs
between the shimmerings of the poplar trees
perhaps from khorasan perhaps from the steppes of pamir
into the inlands of sakarya3 with flesh hoof and horns
welcome turk!... to your right and to your left water all over
your earth is trembling with a mad abundance
how much lead how much sulfur can you extract
your fingers draw wine if you stretch your hand
from the seeded grapes a vineyard full
a greenish olive oil is shining in many pots
the smell of the cottage cheese is for you to savor
many mountain goats are falling into your fire
drawing delicate crescents with their horns in the night
welcome turk... cloudy a bit dreamy perhaps
all your hopes are raised at once
you gave your name to this land and pledged your existence

1 Avshar – the name of a Turcoman tribe in South Turkey and South Iran

ATTILA ILHAN - A SONG IN MY HEART

A SONG IN MY HEART
those are the plane trees of rugged lives smoky and hazy they are found
in the magnificent western horizons
when you look at them at a distance
you can't make out whether they are clouds or plane trees as soon as they 100m up with
their mysterious leaves they vanish behind a sheet of rain
a song in my heart
the same one I sang
the day I was arrested
the birds abandon the woods dragging behind
their chirping like a bunch of sparks and 'the water lilies smile
in their dreamy whiteness
with heavy sighs
a song in my heart
the same one I sang
the day I was arrested
somehow girls loved in November tend to be wary and delicate
in the reflection of the leaves perhaps they seem to blush a lot
their eyelashes spray silver mists
water drips from their finger tips
their words dispersed by the winds they are all alone in death
a song in my heart
the same one I sang
the day I was arrested
the weight of loneliness bear& heavily on the rushes because it cannot be stopped
only occasionally like a gilded thread ,-;- (, glisten the whistles of the invisible geese

ATTILA ILHAN - MEHMET SIRADAĞLARI

if there’s a vacant stone in this land jam on top of it
heaving and restless like a factory
if there’s an empty fathom in this sea I am on top of it
foggy and smoky like a boat in february
I come out of the september mines blackened
I am the evening light at the school of economics
falling on the books respectfully through the rainwashed windows
of all the mehmets existing it is my name doubtless
from yunuz emre on I am mehmet siradağlari
because I listened to the earth understood the iron felt the coals
the drums beat up in the skies my invincibility in wars
because I was hit with many bullets and wounded in the name of god.
if I got up one mehmet I sat down a thousand mehmets
I brought the turk from asia to europe
volcanoes are jealous of my inextinguishable fires
every bayonet against imperialism is my name
from mustafa kemal on I am mehmet siradağlari
no matter how tight they were bound in my wrists
the bloody handcuffs enslaving me to myself are unshackled
the dark field is dizzy the factory is hungry
for some reason the last windows always face the prison yards
even if the sun is shining inside rne outside is all winter
but the gates are wide open and the chains are broken
most majestic ideas are rousing the masses
every step toward a free socialism is my name
from nazim hikmet on I am mehmet siradağlari

ATTILA ILHAN - BIRD OF IMAGINATION - IMGELEM KUŞLARI

the most frightening crimson ones hit the windows of my sleep
with pointed beaks shiny like the scales of fish
their loneliness is untamed their eyes are heavy maharajah eyes
their magnetic crests like a handful of sparks
their slender necks reach out to all kinds of daydreams you think
they’re the red velvet holders of purple hubble-bubbles
when they open their wings the clouds change their colors
in their complicated feet they wear cloven slippers of lightning
the echo of their horrible green screech narrows the horizons
their shrieks pierce the bloody palms of the tyrants
they’re the birds of imagination elusive turn into dust when touched
to exist in freedom only is their most unforgivable crime.

ATTILA ILHAN - ESKİ DENİZ HALKI - ANCIENT MARINE FOLK

we were fifteen
over the coffin
of the dead man
heave ho a bottle of rum
satan and drink
made us sink
heave ho a bottle of rum
over there a strange pebble chants
sea shepherds have driven their flocks into the open sea
mussels’ eyes have harlot’s blue pupils
in the boundless west green galleons of time
were sighted unforgettable and green
drenched in blood
in glittery splendor
you can hear the ancient marine folk
if you listen
in the kinky marine taverns
the kinky marine folk
spanish songs italian wine
and as if you were god you invent curses
from the fifteenth meridian
to the twentieth
by yourself
you invent international curses
and from the libra mast
you god of curses splashings unknown things
you god of lost treasures
you won’t look back nor spit to the wind
unless black sails are hoisted on the admiral’s own masts
chaste breezes will not kindle sparks
in your pirate’s eyes
unless you get used to
chewing the rain and the tobacco
I have not forgotten the mediterranean
I have plunged in the flames I cried with passion
the joy to create
and to be created reverberated in heavens
and the prayers opened like enormous sails
when one looked three crescents spread out all at once
hayrettin’s songs flew like falcons from his arms
windswept barefoot mariners of the algerian captain
were holding messina and septe straits and all the others
surrounding the caravans of ships
they burned them up
la-ilahe-il-allah
but your festivities your troubles will not be forsaken
by the stars in every constellation
and the lighthouses in every isthmus
then you would go to rome with hannibal
long before that phoenicians carried the alphabet and the glass
when dragons breathed sea monsters appeared
the ghost of a genoese galley slave in rhodes castle
his legs in shackles
the whiplash on his back
and latin songs pour forth
from the ships of antonius
you are
unforeseen unforgettable unbearable and deep
as roguish as a deckhand or the mustache of a sailor
the wind is blowing unconstrained from all sides
your centuries old pirate fate
is tattooed on your arms and on your boundless chests
angel-faced mermaids and slippery dolphins
in green and glittery speckles
so what you understand about this world
is the same what children understand
although time is getting older you are still a child
you are the ancient graveyard of pirates and sailors
you are the graveyard of hayrettin’s songs
with your majestic waves you are the big ocean’s
star studded multitudes of plankton life
skates and sea anemones
you are god and you contain countless other gods in your kingdom
the master skippers who ruled over the currents
some sailing north north-east some westward
there was a captain joy we buried him in the arctic sea
there was an andersen and a captain kidd
skippers salih reis burak reis memi reis
bursting in laughter together like canons in salvo
being tossed around and scattered
we died at a festival of giants
then the fish-garths in kushadasi and surmene
to be old and beautiful to defy memory to forget
all the stars but recognize the north star at one glance
then the italian fishermen with briny beards
then like in hell in tatters bit by bit
to enter a port where the fox spat copper
to go ashore feeling like the karakurum desert
and wretchedness of returning like a flood of wine
o my beloved times
the times when we sailed toward the south pole
from the terra del fuega
from the land of fire

AŞIK VEYSEL - UZUN İNCE BİR YOLDAYIM - I'M ON A LONG WAY

I'm on a long and narrow road,
I walk all day, I walk all night,
I cannot tell what is my plight,
I walk all day, I walk all night.

Soon as I came into the world,
That moment I began my fight,
I'm in an inn with double gates,
I walk all day, I walk all night.

I walk in sleep - I find no cause,
To linger, whether dark or light,
I see the travellers on the road,
I walk all day, I walk all night.

Forty-nine years upon these roads,
On desert plain, on mountain height,
In foreign lands I make my way,
I walk all day, I walk all night.

Sometimes it seems an endless road,
The goal is very far from sight,
On minute, and the journey's o'er-
I walk all day, I walk all night.

Veysel does wonder at this state,
Lament or laughter, which is right?
Still to attain that distant goal,
I walk all day, I walk all night.

Bilmiyorum Ne Haldeyim
Gidiyorum Gündüz Gece

Dünyaya Geldiğim Anda
Yürüdüm Aynı Zamanda
İki Kapılı Bir Handa
Gidiyorum Gündüz Gece

Uykuda Dahi Yürüyom
Kalmaya Sebep Arıyom
Gidenleri Hep Görüyom
Gidiyorum Gündüz Gece

Kırk Dokuz Yıl Bu Yollarda
Ovada Dağda Çöllerde
Düşmüşüm Gurbet Ellerde
Gidiyorum Gündüz Gece

Düşünülürse Derince
Uzak Görünür Görünce
Bir Yol Dakka Miktarınca
Gidiyorum Gündüz Gece

Şaşar Veysel İş Bu Hale
Kah Ağlaya Kahi Güle
Yetişmek İçin Menzile
Gidiyorum Gündüz Gece

AŞIK VEYSEL - BENİ HOR GÖRME GARDAŞIM - DON'T LOOK DOWN ON ME,MY BROTHER

Don’t look down on me, my brother
You're the gold, so am I then the bronze?
We come to exist from the same existence
You are the silver, so am I then the sheet?

Whatever exists with you and me
The same existence is in every body
When headed for the graven tomorrow
You are full, am I then hungry?

Some are Mullahs, some Dervishes
Whatever God gave to us
Some might gather up the bee and flower
You are the honey, so am I than the unusable grain?

All of bodies are from the earth
Kill your self-esteem before dying
The creator seems to have commanded like this
You are the pen, so am I then the nib?

Veysel is in love with nature
We became brotherly from the earth
We are the same passenger, fellow traveler
You are the traveller, so am I then the toll?

Beni hor görme kardaşım
Sen altınsın ben tunç muyum
Aynı vardan varolmuşuz
Sen gümüşsün ben sac mıyım?

Ne varise sende bende
Aynı varlık her bedende
Yarın mezara girende
Sen toksun da ben aç mıyım?

Kimi molla kimi derviş
Allah bize neler vermiş
Kimi arı çiçek dermiş
Sen balsın da ben çeç miyim?

Topraktandır cümle beden
Nefsini öldür ölmeden
Böyle emretmiş yaradan
Sen kalemsin ben uç muyum?

Tabiata Veysel aşık
Topraktan olduk kardaşık
Aynı yolcuyuz yoldaşık
Sen yolcusun ben baç mıyım?

YUNUS EMRE

I HAVE THESE EYES OF MINE TO SEE YOUR FACE;
I ONLY HAVE HANDS TO SEEK YOUR EMBRACE.
TODAY I SHALL SET MY SOUL ON THE ROAD
SO THAT TOMORROW I CAN REACH YOUR PLACE.

LET ME SET MY SOUL ON THE ROAD TODAY,
GRANT ME TOMORROW WHATEVER ITS WORTH.
DO NOT OFFER YOUR PARADISE TO ME,
I HAVE NO WISH TO FLY TO PARADISE.

WHO NEEDS IT, WHAT USE IS HEAVEN TO ME?
MY HEART’S EYE WOULD NOT EVEN GLANCE AT IT.
ALL THIS SORROWFUL CLAMORING OF MINE
IS NOT FOR A GARDEN UP IN THE SKIES.

YOU KEEP TRYING TO USE IT TO ENTICE
THE FAITHFUL, BUT WHAT YOU CALL PARADISE
CANNOT BOAST OF MORE THAN A FEW HOURIS
AND I DON’T HANKER AFTER THEIR CARESS.

    OFFER IT TO THOSE WHO GO BY THE CREED;
YOU’RE THE ONE I CRAVE, YOU’RE THE ONE I NEED.
MY LEAVING YOU WOULD BE A SHAEMFUL DEED
FOR THE SAKE OF A MANSION AND TRELLIS.

YUNUS EMRE

I WONDER IS ANYONE HERE
A STRANGER AS FORLORN AS I?
HIS HEART WOUNDED, HIS EYES TEARFUL...
A STARNGER AS FORLORN AS I?

LET NO ONE BE LONESOME LIKE ME
OR WRITHE IN EXILE'S AGONY.
TEACHER, I HOPE NO ONE WILL BE
A STRANGER AS FORLORN AS I?

THEY'LL SAY, "HE'S DEAD, THAT SAD STRANGER."
HEARING OF IT THREE DAYS LATER,
THEY'LL WASH MY CORPSE IN COLD WATER...
A STRANGER AS FORLORN AS I?

YUNUS GETS NO HELP NOR PITY.
NO CURE FOR HIS CALAMITY,
DRIFTING FROM CITY TO CITY...
A STRANGER AS FORLORN AS I?

YUNUS EMRE

I LOVE YOU BEYOND THE DEPTHS OF MY OWN SOUL;
ON MY WAY, I SHUN THE CANNON AND ITS CALL.

DON'T SAY I'M IN MYSELF. I AM NOT AT ALL.
THERE IS AN I WITHIN ME, DEEP, DEEPER THAN I.

WHEREVER I LOOK, I SEE YOU'VE FILLED THAT SPACE:
WHERE, IN MY INMOST SOUL, CAN YOU HAVE YOUR PLACE?

DON'T ASK ME ABOUT ME: I'M NOT INSIDE ME...
IN ITS ROBE, MY BODY WALKS ON, ALL EMPTY.

MY LOVE FOR YOU HAS PLUCKED ME AWAY FROM ME:
WHAT SWEET PAIN IS THIS? IT'S BEYOND REMEDY.

AS HE PASSED BY, YUNUS CHANCED TO MEET THE FRIEND,
AND REMAINED AT THE GATE AT THE DEEPEST END.

YUNUS EMERE - GEL GÖR BENİ AŞK NEYLEDİ - COME TO SEE WHAT LOVE HAS DONE TO ME

BURNING, BURNING, I DRIFT AND TREAD.
LOVE SPATTERED MY BODY WITH BLOOD.
I AM NOT IN MY SENSES NOR MAD,
COME, SEE WHAT LOVE HAS DONE TO ME

NOW AND THEN LIKE THE WINDS I BLOW,
NOW AND THEN LIKE THE ROADS I GO,
NOW AND THEN LIKE THE FLOODS I FLOW,
COME, SEE WHAT LOVE HAS DONE TO ME.

HOLD MY HAND, LIFT ME FROM THIS PLACE
OR TAKE ME INTO YOUR EMBRACE...
YOU MADE ME WEEP, MAKE ME REJOICE,
COME, SEE WHAT LOVE HAS DONE TO ME.

LOVELORN, I TREAD; MADLY I SCREAM.
MY LOVED ONE IS MY ONLY DREAM;
I WAKE AND PLUNGE INTO DEEP GLOOM.
COME SEE WHAT LOVE HAS DONE TO ME.

LET ME SINK INTO THAT SEA AND WALK ON.
LET BOTH WORLDS BECOME MY SPHERE WHERE I CAN

LET ME BECOME THE NIGHTINGALE THAT SINGS...
A SOUL FREED FROM THE DEAD BODY'S YEARNINGS;
LET ME BURRY MY HEAD IN MY TWO HANDS,
TAKE THE PATH TO UNITY AND WALK ON.

THANK HEAVEN, I SAW THE FRIEND'S LOVELY FACE
AND DRUNK THE WINE OF THE LOVER'S EMBRACE.
IT SEVERS ME FROM YOU3Ú4IT'S A DISGRAC...
I'LL ABANDON THIS CITY AND WALK ON.

AT ONCE, IT BEGAN TO ADORE...
NOW, ONE MOMENT IT BASKS IN JOY;
NEXT MOMENT ITS TEARS START TO POUR.

ONE MOMENT IT SEEMS LIKE A BIRD
IN THE DEAD OF WINTER, STRANDED.
NEXT MOMENT IT REVELS - GARDENS
AND ORCHARDS ARE BORN AT ITS CORE.

ONE MOMENT IT BECOMES TONGUE-TIED
AND LEAVES ALL THINGS UNCLARIFIED.
NEXT MOMENT, PEARLS SPILL FROM ITS MOUTH:
TO THOSE WHO SUFFER, IT GIVES CURE.

ONE MOMENT IT SOARS TO HEAVEN...
IT DESCENDS INTO THE EARTH, THEN...
ONE MOMENT IT SEEMS LIKE A DROP,
THEN BECOMES THE OCEAN WHOSE WAVES ROAR.

BANA SENI GEREK SENI

YOUR LOVE HAS TAKEN ME AWAY FROM ME,
YOU'RE THE ONE I NEED, YOU'RE THE ONE I CRAVE.
DAY AND NIGHT I BURN, GRIPPED BY AGONY,
YOU'RE THE ONE I NEED, YOU'RE THE ONE I CRAVE.

NE VARLIGA SEVINIRIM
NE YOKLUGA YERINIRIM
ASKIN ILE AVUNURUM
BANA SENI GEREK SENI...

I FIND NO GREAT JOY IN BEING ALIVE,
IF I CEASE TO EXIST, I WOULD NOT GRIEVE,
THE ONLY SOLACE I HAVE IS YOUR LOVE,
YOU'RE THE ONE I NEED, YOU'RE THE ONE I CRAVE

ASKIN ÂSIKLAR ÖLDÜRÜR
ASK DENIIZINE DALDIRIR
TECELLIS ILE DOLDURUR
BANA SENI GEREK SENI...

LOVERS YEARN FOR YOU, BUT YOUR LOVE SLAYS TEHM,
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA IT LAYS THEM,
IT HAS GOD'S IMAGES - IT DISPLAYS THEM;
YOU'RE THE ONE I NEED, YOU'RE THE ONE I CRAVE.

ASKIN SARABINDAN IÇEM
MECNUN OLUP DAGA DÜSEM
SENSIN DÜN Ü GÜN ENDISEM
BANA SENI GEREK SENI...

LET ME DRINK THE WINE OF LOVE SIP BY SIP,
LIKE MECNUN, LIVE IN THE HILLS IN HARDSHIP,
DAY AND NIGHT, CARE FOR YOU HOLDS ME IN ITS GRIP,
YOU'RE THE ONE I NEED, YOU'RE THE ONE I CRAVE.

EGER BENIÖLDÜRELER
KÜLÜM GÖGE SAVURALAR
TOPRAGIM ONDA ÇAGIRA
BANA SENI GEREK SENI...

EVEN IF, AT THE END, THEY MAKE ME DIE
AND SCATTER MY ASHES UP TO THE SKY,
MY PIT WOULD BREAK INTO THIS OUTCRY:
YOU'RE THE ONE I NEED, YOU'RE THE ONE I CRAVE.

YUNUS'DÜRÜR BENİM ADIM
GÜN GEÇTİKÇE ARTAR OLDUM
İKİ CİHANDA MAKSUDUM
BANA SENİ GEREK SENİ...

"YUNUS EMRE THE MYSTIC" IS MY NAME,
EACH PASSING DAY FANS AND ROUSES MY FLAME,
WHAT I DESIRE IN BOTH WORLDS IS THE SAME:
YOU'RE THE ONE I NEED, YOU'RE THE ONE I CRAVE.

YUNUS EMRE

   WITH THE MOUNTAINS AND ROCKS
... I CALL YOU OUT, MY GOD;
.. WITH THE BIRDS AS DAY BREAKS
... I CALL YOU OUT, MY GOD.

   WITH JESUS IS THE SKY,
...MOSES ON MOUNT SINAI,
...RAISING MY SCEPTRE HIGH,
...I CALL YOU OUT, MY GOD.

YUNUS EMRE

DESIRING TO FIND THE LOVED ONE
IN THIS WORLD, NO MATTER HOW VAST,
OVER THE EARTH, HITHER AND YON,
THROUGH THE HEAVENS, I ROAMED AGHAST.

THE PROVIDENCE THAT CASTS THIS SPELL
AND SPEAKS SO MANY TONGUES TO TELL,
TRANSCENDS THE EARTH, HEAVEN AND HELL,
BUT IS CONTAINED IN THIS HEART'S CAST.

THIS YEARNING TORMENTED MY MIND:
I SEARCHED THE HEAVENS AND THE GROUND;
I LOOKED AND LOOKED, BUT FAILED TO FIND.
I FOUND HIM INSIDE MAN AT LAST.

YUNUS EMRE

GO AND LET IT BE KNOWN TO ALL LOVERS:
I AM THE MAN WHO GAVE HIS HEART TO LOVE.
I TURN INTO A WILD DUCK OF PASSION,
I AM THE ONE WHO TAKES THE SWIFTEST DIVE.

FROM THE WAVES OF THE SEA I TAKE WATER
AND OFFER IT ALL THE WAY TO THE SKIES.
IN ADORATION, LIKE A CLOUD, I SOAR...
I AM THE ONE WHO FLIES TO HEAVENS ABOVE.

NAZIM HİKMET RAN -BENCE SEN DE ŞİMDİ HERKES GİBİSİN - I THINK NOW YOU ARE JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE

Gözlerim gözünde aşkı seçmiyor
Onlardan kalbime sevda geçmiyor
Ben yordum ruhumu biraz da sen yor
Çünkü bence şimdi herkes gibisin
Yolunu beklerken daha dün gece
Kaçıyorum bugün senden gizlice
Kalbime baktım da işte iyice
Anladım ki sen de herkes gibisin
Büsbütün unuttum seni eminim
Maziye karıştı şimdi yeminim
Kalbimde senin için yok bile kinim
Bence sen de şimdi herkes gibisin

My eyes don't see the love in your eyes.
My heart doesn't receive the love from them.
I've already exhausted my soul, take, exhaust it a little more.
Because I think you're just like everybody else now.
Though last night I was waiting for you to come,
today I'm running away from you secretly.
See, I'd looked into my heart well enough,
then I understood that you're just like everybody else.
I completely forgot you, I'm sure about that.
Now my promise has gone to the past.
I don't even have grudge for you in my heart.
I think you're just like everybody else now.

Hiroshima (A Little Girl / The Dead Girl)

It is me, the one knocking at the doors
At the doors one after the other
I can not be seen in your eyes
The deaths can not be seing in eyes
Since I died in Hiroshima
It has been so ten years
I'm a 7-year-old girl
The death children don't grow up
First, my hairs caught fire
My eyes burned out (and got parched)
I became a handful of ashes
My ashes got scattered into the air...
(I don't wish anything for myself from you
Just, a child who was burnt like a paper
Can not even eat candies
I’m knocking at your door
Aunt, Uncle... give a signature...
The children shouldn't be killed
So they also can be able to eat candies.

ORHAN VELİ KANIK - WAVE

I

I need neither paper nor pen
To imagine I'm happy.
A cigarette stuck between my fingers,
I plunge into the blue
Of the painting before me.

The sea drags me along and I go;
The sea pulls, land holds back.
What is there in the air?
Booze or something like that?
Drives you mad, gets you drunk.

It's all lies, I know;
It's a lie that I'm a barge or a boat;
The coolness of water in my ribs,
The wind humming through the loops,
The engine whirring for weeks on end -
All lies.

And yet,
Some lovely days,
I can live in the joy of the blue,
Floating like a watermelon rind
Like the shadow of a tree over the sky,
Like the haze that engulfs the plums at dawn,
Like the haze, the fog, love and fragrance.

II
Neither paper will suffice nor pen
For me to imagine myself happy.
All this is, well, claptrap.
I am neither barge nor boat.
I should be somewhere else,
At a much different place,
Neither like a watermelon rind
Nor light nor fog nor haze...
But like a human being.

ORHAN VELİ KANIK - ILLUSION

I am over an old love:

Now all the woman are pretty,

My shirt is brand new,

            I took a bath
        And shaved.

Peace is here,

Spring in the air,

The sun is out.

I'm in the street; people are cherful;

I'm cheerful too.

Eski bir sevdadan kurtulmuşum;
Artık bütün kadınlar güzel;
Gömleğim yeni,
Yıkanmışım,
Tıraş olmuşum;
Sulh olmuş.
Bahar gelmiş.
Güneş açmış.
Sokağa çıkmışım, insanlar rahat;
Ben de rahatım.

ORHAN VELİ KANIK - TOWARD FREEDOM - HÜRRİYETE DOĞRU

Before dawn,

While the sea is still snow-white, you will set sail;
The grip of the oars in your palms,

And in your heart the joy of toil and vigor,

You will go.

In the roll and sway of the nets, you will go.

For welcome, fish will appear on your course

Delighting you.

As you shake the nets,

Scale by scale, the sea will journey into your hands.

When silence pervades the souls of seagulls

In the cemetery of the rocks,

All of a sudden,

All hell will break loose on the horizon:

Mermaids will scuttle and birds scurry...

Saturnalia and festivals, orgies and carnivals,

Bridal processions, masquerades, revelries, carausals...

Heeeyy!

Whaddya waiting for, man, jump in the sea!

Forget who's waitying for you back there.

Don't you see: Freedom is all around you.

Be the sail, the oar, the rudder, the fish, the water,

And go, go whereever you can.

HÜRRİYETE DOĞRU
Gün doğmadan,
Deniz daha bembeyazken çıkacaksın yola.
Kürekleri tutmanın şehveti avuçlarında,
İçinde bir iş görmenin saadeti,
Gideceksin
Gideceksin ırıpların çalkantısında.
Balıklar çıkacak yoluna, karşıcı;
Sevineceksin.
Ağları silkeledikce
Deniz gelecek eline pul pul;
Ruhları sustuğu vakit martıların,
Kayalıklardaki mezarlarında,
Birden
Bir kıyamettir kopacak ufuklarda.
Denizkızları mı dersin, kuşlar mı dersin;
Bayramlar seyranlar mı dersin,
Şenlikler cümbüşler mi?
Gelin alayları, teller, duvaklar,
Donanmalar mı?
Heeey
Ne duruyorsun be, at kendini denize:
Geride bekliyenin varmış, aldırma;
Görmüyor musun, Her yanda hürriyet;
Yelken ol, kürek ol, dümen ol, balık ol, su ol;
Git gidebildiğin yere...
